Diversity Initiatives

The Colleges of the Arts and Sciences is committed to providing a welcoming environment for all of our students, faculty, and staff.  Our goal is to recruit, retain, and promote a greater number of individuals from underrepresented groups in all of our academic units.  The Executive Dean’s Office is particularly committed to working closely with the five colleges in the recruitment, hiring, and retention of top quality faculty and staff, paying particular attention to the view that there is strength in diversity.  In order to establish a greater diversity among our constituents, ASC has created several initiatives.

  • The Diversity Services Office serves minority students in the Arts and Sciences as well as the Exploration Program.  Culturally sensitive advising professionals provide special counseling services, including academic advising, degree-planning, and personalized career development.
  • The Diversity Enhancement Advisory Council, established in 2005, advises the Executive Dean on recruitment, retention, curriculum, climate, operations, and all diversity-related issues that may affect the high performance of faculty, staff, and students within the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences.
  • The Colleges of the Arts and Sciences has recently established an Ethnic Studies Program under the Office of Interdisciplinary Programs, which consists of American Indian Studies, Asian American Studies, and Latino/a Studies.
  • At the suggestion of the Diversity Enhancement Advisory Council, a new program for graduate recruitment, retention, and recognition was piloted in 2007 to develop a flexible recruitment model and to document and disseminate best practices throughout the Arts and Sciences. The goal is to establish sustainable mechanisms capable of actively identifying, recruiting, and retaining a diverse cohort of excellent graduate students. To carry out this pilot, the Office of the Executive Dean will work closely with the Arts and Sciences colleges, the Graduate School, and the Office of Minority Affairs.
