Departmental Grants

General Focus: to support hiring and retention, based on three priorities: diversity, interdisciplinarity that crosses college boundaries, and the enhancement of national and/or international visibility. Three categories of special opportunities are listed below in order of priority:

1) Hiring and Retention Program

This program is designed to support with cash allocations the annual hiring processes in departments and colleges across the arts and sciences. The level of requests vary in keeping with need and the availability of funds. The expectation is that requests will be for the support of research or salary for up to three years, or in support of spousal negotiations.

Deadline: Proposals for support may be submitted at any time during the academic year.

Application: On a first come, first served basis, tenure initiating units (TIUs) may submit a proposal letter. When the request is in support of interdisciplinarity, the expectation is that the proposal will be a partnership with either a TIU in another college or, as appropriate, with an ASC interdisciplinary program (for example, the Undergraduate International Studies Program or the Film Studies Program). When the proposal is in support of diversity or national/international visibility, the expectation is that it will include both departmental and college support. The proposal letter should include:

  • An explanation by the applicant(s) of the nature of the hiring opportunity; how it enhances curricular offerings in the arts and sciences; how it supports federation priorities.
  • An explanation, when appropriate, of the nature of the partnership—i.e., across college boundaries, or between a department and an ASC interdisciplinary program, or a combination.
  • A detailed budget outlining costs, including an itemizing of the funds that are being provided by the applicants or partners, as appropriate.

Submission Process: Please e-mail your proposal letter and any supporting documents to ascopportunities@osu.edu.

Selection Process: Decisions for funding will be made by the Executive Dean based on ASC priorities and the availability of funding.

2) Visiting Scholars Program

This program is designed to enhance efforts of tenure initiating units in the arts and sciences to participate more actively in the development and implementation of innovative curricular offerings in the interdisciplinary programs that focus on aspects of diverse identities (African American and African Studies, American Indian Studies, Asian American Studies, Comparative Ethnic Studies, Disability Studies, Latino/a Studies, Sexuality Studies, Women’s Studies). The purpose is to: promote innovative interdisciplinary intersectional teaching and research; create more coherent and more stable curricular offerings in a specific area; and enhance the environment across the arts and sciences and beyond for learning, research, and interactive cultural interchange. The fund will support one fellowship annually, providing 50% of salary, up to $40,000 in cash for one year (with the opportunity for a one-year renewal) to be matched by support from the TIU and college making the request.

Deadline: April 1. If the deadline falls on a weekend, then the application will be due on the following Monday.

Application—A proposal letter should include the following:
  • An explanation of the specific role(s) that the visitor will play in meeting the priorities of the ASC Visiting Scholars Program as articulated above
  • An explanation of how the presence of the guest is intended to enhance curricular offerings in the tenure initiating unit and the partnering interdisciplinary program, as specified in the guidelines above.
  • An explanation of how the presence of the guest is intended to add to intellectual vitality and engagement in the arts and sciences; to add to the diversity of our campus community; generally to support federation priorities.
  • A timeline for the visit with an explanation of the anticipated impact of the visit on ongoing operations in the tenure initiating unit and the partnering interdisciplinary program.
  • A detailed budget (including a specification of matching funding) explaining the support required for the visit.
  • A statement of affirmation from the tenure initiating unit and the respective dean of the area involved.

Submission Process: Please e-mail your proposal letter and any supporting documents to ascopportunities@osu.edu.

The purpose is to facilitate the globalization of the arts and sciences curricular offerings and community, with the expectation that the visitor will be in residence at OSU for an extended period (at least a week or more). The expectation is that, at the maximum level of support, the funding will support four appointments. The proposal letter should include:
  • An explanation of the role that the visitor will play in the globalization of the area.
  • An explanation of how the presence of the guest is intended to enhance curricular offerings in the arts and sciences; add to intellectual engagement; add to the global diversity of our community; and support federation priorities.
