A Welcome from the Executive Dean

Welcome to the web site of the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University. I'm glad you've chosen to visit our site and hope it will help you learn more about the academic heart of our great university.

The arts and sciences tradition at Ohio State began with the foundation of the university, when Ohio State was still an agricultural and mechanical college. Even so, English as well as ancient and modern languages, were a proud part of its earliest curriculum.

Today, the Arts and Sciences consist of 1,000 faculty organized in five colleges and 41 departments. More than 40% of Ohio State’s undergraduates select a major from the 71 that we offer in the arts, biological sciences, humanities, mathematical and physical sciences, and social and behavioral sciences. Arts and Sciences classes account for 60% of all credit hours taught at Ohio State, including 90% of the General Education Curriculum and 75% of all honors credit hours. Our programs are responsible for fully half of both the undergraduate and doctoral degrees awarded at the university. No wonder we call the Arts and Sciences the Ohio State experience!

Our students, undergraduate and graduate alike, are taught by an accomplished faculty whose shared mission includes a common commitment to basic research and creative work. Not surprisingly, then, our faculty are defining and driving the shape of the nation’s arts and sciences in fields that range from Anthropology to Women’s Studies. So, whether your interests lie in moving image art or Antarctic geology, political behavior, molecular genetics, or Latin American history, the Arts and Sciences at Ohio State have something to offer.
