Quick Facts

At Ohio State, the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences make up the academic core of the university. The five colleges—Arts, Biological Sciences, Humanities, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, and Social and Behavioral Sciences—bear some notable numbers:

  • We teach 14,000 undergraduates and 3,000 graduate students.
  • We are comprised of 41 departments and more than 1,000 faculty, making us one of the largest groups of liberal arts faculty in the United States.
  • According to national rankings, eight Arts and Sciences departments or programs are ranked in the top 10 in their fields.
  • Nearly half of the 41 departments or their programs are ranked in the top 25.
  • Forty percent of Ohio State undergraduates select a major from 71 Arts and Sciences undergraduate degree programs.
  • Our classes account for 60 percent of all credit hours taught at Ohio State.
  • Our programs are responsible for approximately half of both the undergraduate and doctoral degrees and a quarter of the master’s degrees awarded by the university.
  • More than 2,000 students are a part of the Arts and Sciences Honors Program, and their average GPA is 3.56.
  • The majority of Ohio State students who elect to study abroad are from the Arts and Sciences. Some 700 of our majors—60% of the university total—regularly participate in programs that take them across the United States and around the globe.
