Special Initiatives
The Office of the Executive Dean provides leadership for special initiatives in support of international action; interdisciplinary teaching and research; and the recruitment, retention, and recognition of faculty, students, and staff. Current initiatives include:
Ohio State Africa Network
The university’s Africa Network is a forum for our faculty, staff, and students to build knowledge, conduct research, and collaborate with our African counterparts to address problems and issues. The Colleges of the Arts and Sciences has taken the administrative lead in forming the network and serves as its home. Other founding partners are the Office of International Affairs and the Center for African Studies.
Institute on Women, Gender, and Public Policy
The institute was created to bring coherence and stability to existing efforts to research complex societal issues through the eyes of women and children and to enhance and expand these efforts in interdisciplinary ways. It also provides a chamber in which scholars can gather, exchange ideas, work collaboratively, and disseminate their scholarship through multiple mechanisms, and it will allow the university to connect this important work to the communities around the state more effectively. Partners of the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences are the Department of Women’s Studies, the John Glenn School of Public Affairs, and The Women’s Place.
65th Anniversary of the Undergraduate International Studies Program
The year 2008 marks the 65th anniversary of the Undergraduate International Studies Program. Under the leadership of Professor Anthony Mughan, the program takes great pride in being:
- one of the oldest, most comprehensive programs in the nation.
- among the top ten majors of choice at the university.
- a leader on campus in offering students richly diverse global knowledge and experience with regard to both thematic concentrations—Development Studies, International Relations and Diplomacy, World Economy and Business, and Security and Intelligence—as well as geographical areas around the globe.
The celebration will encompass 18 months of activities for students, alumni, the campus community, and the public, starting in Winter Quarter 2008 and continuing through Spring Quarter 2009.
