The 10th Annual Arts and Sciences Alumni Buckeye Island Hop (IHOP)
The 10th Annual Arts and Sciences Alumni Buckeye Island Hop (IHOP) took place October 7-9, 2011 and was a rousing success. More than 40 arts and sciences alumni volunteered to clean on and around Gibraltar and South Bass islands.
The goals of the weekend were to learn about one of Ohio State's finest jewels, the F.T. Stone Laboratory, complete a vigorous outdoor volunteer project to benefit the Lake Erie region, meet new friends and have fun on Gibraltar and South Bass Islands.

Alumna Karen Jennings submitted this report from the weekend:
Probably the worst jobs included scrubbing the walls of the fish runs in the Aquatic Visitor Center (AVC) with acid, power washing the outside of the 4-story classroom building, washing down the walls of Peach Point cottage with tri-sodium phosphate, cleaning out the first floor of the Research Building and preparing it for renovation, and cleaning out the basement of the grungy South Bass Island lighthouse. Other jobs that dirtied the volunteers were spreading mulch at the Nature Center on South Bass, planting 50 mums at Perry’s Monument, removing perennial growth and weeks at the Lake Erie Island Historical Society, and landscaping, and brush cutting on both islands. A few jobs required skills like painting the outdoor metal staircase at the swimming hole, building a compost bin, repairing wooden steps on Alligator Bar, and priming the oil shed on the lighthouse grounds. Other completed jobs included insulating Bayview Cottage and organizing educational materials at the AVC.

Although it was a long work day we experienced the best weather in 10 years! The day ended with a wine and cheese reception at the Gazebo, photos on the patio and a perch dinner. Lisa Brohl, who has taught botany classes at Stone Lab, presented “Conserving Island Lands – A Thankful Look Back”. She received the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Conservation award in 2010. We learned that the Lake Erie Chapter of the Black Swamp Conservancy has saved many of the traditional Stone Lab field trip destinations including Haunck’s Pond, now called the Kuehne Wildlife Area, on South Bass. This group is working on saving and/or expanding many other areas including Cooper’s Woods and Jane Coates Wildlife Trail on South Bass.
The Buckeye IHOP, outstanding example of cooperative alumni engagement between ASC and the Friends of Stone Lab, contributed to this great accomplishment.
