Annual Ludden Lecture: Jaś Elsner

April 14, 2015
All Day
Jennings Hall 001

Event Host: Department of History of Art

The Department of History of Art presents the 2015 Ludden Lecture with Jaś Elsner discussing “Visual Ontologies: Style, Archaism and the Construction of the Sacred in the Western Tradition.” His presentation is Tuesday, April 14 at 6 p.m. in 001 Jennings Hall. A reception follows in 214 Pomerene Hall. The event is free and open to all.

Elsner’s lecture examines the ways sacred images have been framed by other images, often in different styles, within the Western tradition in order to establish their aura. The lecture will move from ancient Greece and Rome via the Middle Ages in Byzantium and the west to the Counter Reformation.

Jaś Elsner is the Humphrey Payne Senior Research Fellow in Classical Archaeology and Art at Corpus Christi College, Oxford; and visiting professor of art and religion at the University of Chicago.

The Ludden Lecture was established in 1986 to honor Franklin M. Ludden, professor and former chair of the Department of History of Art, who passed away in 2002. The lectures are intended to reflect an interdisciplinary approach to the study of History of Art with an emphasis on theory and criticism.
