The film festival includes a series of award-winning international shorts (7 p.m.) and a one-hour documentary (8.30 p.m.). Admission is free. The event is presented by Ohio State’s Department of Dance and the Wexner Center, and is curated by Mitchell Rose, assistant professor of filmmaking in the Department of Dance. “Dance-film is a burgeoning art form,” Rose said.“When dance is melded with film grammar, it can explode off the stage and impact audiences in a powerfully kinetic way. Choreographed by Ohio State alumna Amie Dowling. Slow Karel van Laere, The Netherlands The human body is defenseless as a man is dragged through Taiwan by an electric winch. Birds David Hinton, UK A dance-film made entirely of found footage of bird movements. Up. Side. Down. Daniel Diller, USA A kaleidoscope of dance and parkour, filmed by recent Ohio State Dance graduate Diller. Sonata Nadia Micault, Belgium An animation of rotoscoped choreography. Off Ground Boudewijn Koole, The Netherlands A dance of loss and longing between a boy and his dying mother. 8:30 p.m. Documentary Film Upaj: Improvise Hoku Uchiyama, USA, 55 minutes This riveting behind-the-scenes documentary chronicles the unlikely East-meets-West collaboration between African American tap superstar Jason Samuels Smith and Indian classical dance icon Chitresh Das.
