The Ohio State University’s Appalachian Project is hosting a screening and director's discussion of Hollow: an Interactive Documentary, an award-winning documentary that explores the future of rural American through the eyes of those who live amid the coal fields of McDowell County, West Virginia. They are struggling to save their rural community — in jeopardy because of high unemployment and an exodus of young people (since 1950, the county has lost 80 percent of its population).
Director Elaine McMillion will guide guests through the documentary experience, providing her inside perspective on each interactive short and taking questions from the audience. McMillion is a documentary storyteller and media artist living in Boston. She was raised in southern West Virginia.
Hollow is the IDFA DocLab 2013 Official Selection and Tribeca Film Institute 2012 New Media Fund Award Winner.
This event is co-sponsored by The Literacy in Appalachia GradGroup, the Film Studies Program, the Digital Media Studies Program, the Goldberg Center for Excellence in Teaching, and the Folklore Student Association.
