035 Psychology Building

Event Host: Department of Psychology

Jim Blascovich, PhD, University of California - Santa Barbara, presents: "Challenge/Threat Meets fMRI: A History."

The biopsychosocial model of challenge and threat has its roots in a simple research study published long ago. The identification of patterns of cardiovascular responses marking of these motivational states has become more rewarding as both our understanding of psychophysiological processes and assessment technologies have increased in sophistication. The challenge/threat paradigm has been employed by dozens of researchers to examine the putative motivational states underlying many social influence processes. Recently, our lab has focused on overcoming the technological hurdles of collecting these markers in vivo during functional magnetic resonance imaging research in humans. This now allows us to parse out motivational states during fMRI studies thereby decreasing individual differences in the BOLD signal results of fMRI studies and examining the putative CNS mechanisms underlying challenge/threat states.
