The Department of Linguistics Annual Pedagogy Lecture Series hosts Michael Flynn, Carleton College, who will lecture on "Undergraduate Linguistics and the Field".
The relationship between the undergraduate curriculum and the field of linguistics is complex. It varies widely among colleges and universities, as I will argue it should. I will review developments in undergraduate linguistics from a point of view that will be familiar to OSU faculty and students. I will suggest principles that should be considered when building or modifying undergraduate curricula. For reasons that I hope to make clear, even though Carleton College is something of a limiting case, the principles at work in the construction of its course offerings in the Linguistics Department are likely to be useful elsewhere.
