Scientific Literacy: Preparing for Citizenship

November 14, 2014
All Day
311 Denney Hall

Event Host: Literacy Studies

In the U.S., people determine public policy directly or indirectly through the legislators they elect. Yet the science on which many policies depend is not democratic, which leads some to question scientific processes, findings, even the motivations of scientists in an attempt to influence public opinion on policy issues such as Ebola, climate change, fracking, genetically modified agriculture, and teaching biological evolution. Panelists Michael Bevis, Susan Olesik, Steve Rissing, Jonathan Baker, Alan Kalish, Chris Manion and Harvey Graff will discuss efforts aimed at helping students understand science.
