Faculty Grants and Awards

Curriculum Development and Innovation Grants

General Focus: to encourage the development, enhancement, and implementation of curricular offerings in the arts and sciences. To be eligible for support, courses and programs must satisfy at least one of the following criteria:
  • Be interdisciplinary with partnerships that cross college boundaries (either within the arts and sciences or between the arts and sciences and the professional or health sciences colleges).
  • Demonstrate new innovations in the uses of technology to support teaching and learning.
  • Incorporate a study, research, internship, or service learning experience abroad (including x94s).

Scope of Funding: In 2007-08, the maximum amount available for this program is $40,000.

Specific Points of Focus: The three priority areas for curriculum development and innovation grants include:

1) Incubator Grants

Deadline: Applications may be submitted at any time during the academic year.

Application Process: The online application cover sheet may be completed by a faculty member in the arts and sciences or a faculty team that may include, not only faculty in the arts and sciences but colleagues in the professional colleges and the health sciences colleges as well. The information provided should:

  • confirm that the project has partnerships that cross college boundaries, enhances curricular offerings in the arts and sciences, and supports federation priorities.
  • indicate the implementation timeline.
  • provide a detailed budget.
  • include a statement indicating the knowledge and view of the project by the department chair and dean of the applicant(s).

Submission Process: Please e-mail application cover sheet and all supporting documents to ascopportunities@osu.edu.

Funding Level: Funding is variable up to $10,000 for a one-time award that can be used to purchase release time, course materials, or services related to offering courses through the Office for Interdisciplinary Programs incubator that have been approved by the ASC Committee on Curriculum and Instruction/CCI.

Selection Process: Applications for grants will be reviewed by Subcommittee A (the Interdisciplinary Subcommittee) of the CCI, who will present their recommendations for awards to the Executive Dean.

2) Technological Innovation Grants

Deadline: Applications may be submitted at any time during the academic year.

Application Process: The online application cover sheet form may be completed by a faculty member in the arts and sciences. The information provided should:

  • confirm that the project demonstrates an innovative use of technology to support teaching and learning, enhances curricular offerings in the arts and sciences, and supports federation priorities.
  • indicate the implementation timeline.
  • provide a detailed budget.
  • include a statement indicating the knowledge and view of the project by the department chair
  • and dean of the applicant(s).

Submission Process: Please e-mail application cover sheet and all supporting documents to ascopportunities@osu.edu.

Funding Level: Funding is variable up to $5,000 for a one-time award that can be used to develop course materials or support services related to offering a technology enhanced course that has been approved by the ASC Committee on Curriculum and Instruction.

Selection Process: Applications for grants will be reviewed by Subcommittee E (the Assessment Subcommittee) of the CCI, who will present their recommendations for awards to the Executive Dean.

3) Global Curriculum Development Grants

Deadline: Applications may be submitted at any time during the academic year.

Application Process: The online application cover sheet may be completed by a faculty member in the arts and sciences. The information provided should:

  • confirm that the project incorporates a study, research, internship, or service learning experience abroad (including x94s), enhances curricular offerings in the arts and sciences, and supports federation priorities.
  • indicate the implementation timeline.
  • provide a detailed budget.
  • include a statement indicating the knowledge and view of the project by the department chair and dean of the applicant(s).

Funding Level: Funding is variable up to $10,000 for a one-time award that can be used to plan and implement the offering of study, research, internship, or service learning experiences abroad that are connected to a CCI-approved course in the arts and sciences.

Selection Process: Applications for grants will be reviewed by a subcommittee of the International Action Advisory Committee with recommendations for awards given to the Executive Dean.

Research Grants

1) Grants for Research and Creative Activity in the Arts and Humanities

General Focus: to encourage new research or creative projects in the arts and humanities. Grants of up to $10,000, $20,000, and $40,000 will be awarded to individual faculty members or small groups of faculty. See the respective websites for more detailed information.

2) Research Grants in Recognition of Exemplary ASC Service

General Focus: to support the specific research projects of faculty after they have provided major leadership for ASC committees, projects, and initiatives, and services in support of federation goals and priorities.

Deadline: Applications may be submitted at any time during the academic year.

Application Process: The online application cover sheet may be completed by a faculty member in the arts and sciences. The information provided should:

  • confirm the nature and amount of leadership and service provided to ASC committees, projects, and initiatives.
  • summarize services rendered in support of federation goals and priorities.
  • provide a description of the research project to be supported and the impact of OED funding.
  • provide a detailed budget of research needs.

Funding: This program is designed to support three grants annually at $5,000 each.

Exemplary Faculty Awards

Harlan Hatcher Memorial Awards for Excellence

General Focus: in recognition of faculty who have developed a noteworthy profile of distinguished, sustained, and balanced achievements in the areas of teaching, research, and service and who serve as role models for both younger colleagues and students. The Harlan Hatcher Memorial Fund for Academic Excellence was established July 12, 2002, with gifts from Mrs. Anne Hatcher and her family from Ann Arbor, Michigan, in honor and memory of Dr. Harlan Hatcher, an alumnus and former dean of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University and then president of the University of Michigan from 1951 until his retirement in 1967.

Deadline: November 15. If the deadline falls on a weekend, then the nomination is due the following Monday.

Nomination Process: Each college may nominate one or two candidates annually. The online nomination cover sheet may be completed by the designated person in the college office of each of the colleges of the arts and sciences or by the Associate Executive Dean for Interdisciplinary Programs. The information should:

  • provide a rationale for the nomination, assessing the accomplishments of the nominee in teaching, research, scholarly or creative work, and service.
  • include a signature of endorsement by the nominee’s department chair and dean, and, when appropriate, the Associate Executive Dean for Interdisciplinary Programs.

Submission Process: Please e-mail nomination cover sheet and all supporting documents to ascopportunities@osu.edu.

Funding: Funding for up to six awards at $1,500 each is provided by the Harlan Hatcher Memorial Fund.
