The Department of African American and African Studies (AAAS) at The Ohio State University invites applications for tenure-track Assistant professor to teach courses in Somali language and culture beginning in fall 2012. Native or near native command of Somali is expected since the candidate will teach beginning, intermediate, advanced, and conversation courses in the language. The candidate’s area of specialization could include the following: Applied Linguistics, Foreign Language Education, Sociolinguistics, or related disciplines. Particular attention will be given to candidates who can teach both Somali and Swahili. Successful candidates will be expected to teach four courses per year at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and develop new interdisciplinary and advanced courses in language, society, and culture. In addition, the candidate will also be expected to direct a study abroad program to East Africa. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of application.

The Department of Art in the College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University invites applications for a regular, tenure-track position at the rank of assistant or associate professor, focused on photography, effective August 2012. Candidates must possess an M.F.A. degree or the equivalent. Candidates must have a demonstrated record of significant photography-based background with commitment to conceptual inquiry and technical expertise. We seek candidates with an active professional creative practice, including a record of exhibitions/presentations/projects beyond the local and regional level. The ideal candidate should have more than three years college-level teaching experience, possess advanced wet darkroom capabilities, and be able to teach digital imaging and printing and a combination of the following: alternative photographic processes, large format photography, and/or studio lighting. The candidate must have knowledge and be well-versed in the theoretical, contemporary and historical lineage of photography. This position will require a commitment to teaching undergraduate and graduate students, and creating a critical and experimental learning environment within a public research university. Previous experience in curricular development, mentoring students, and service on graduate committees is preferred. Service and committee work expected.

The Departments of Biochemistry and Chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University seek applications to fill the faculty position of OHIO EMINENT SCHOLAR,a fully endowed tenured faculty position. The successful applicant will have well-documented research qualifications using modern analytical and physical approaches to investigate topics at the forefront of macromolecular structure and function. Individuals with research interests in proteomics, structure determination, molecular recognition and targeting, epigenetics, RNA biology, metabolomics, or other generally related areas are encouraged to apply. However, more than the specific focus, the quality of the applicant’s research program and promise for future accomplishments will be of primary importance. The Department of Dance in the College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University seeks a dance professional actively engaged in creative activity and theoretical inquiry with an emphasis on dance technique and its application to performance, pedagogy, community engagement, dance literacy, and/or health and science. A person is sought who is connected to the forefront of training practices as it relates to physical knowledge as well as aesthetic development and who has potential to support and advance the Department’s commitment to relevance, application, and context of dance.  Artists/teachers with interdisciplinary perspective are encouraged to apply. We welcome applicants who will diversify our curriculum and our faculty with regard to race, gender, and ethnicity. This candidate will contribute in the following ways:  In Research: develop and disseminate pedagogy and training practices; and one or more of the following: create dance events for sites, stage, and/or community settings; collaborate with scholars and practitioners in health and science disciplines to deepen understanding and application of the dancing body; develop application of Labanotation to documentation, archiving, and creative research practices. In Teaching: bring deep expertise in a specific contemporary form that is based on defined principles and historical/cultural context; and one or more of: choreography, contact improvisation, dance in community settings, dance sciences, movement analysis, notation, pedagogy, performance techniques, site work. In Service: leadership in undergraduate and graduate programs, curriculum development, advising, and governance within the department, college, university, and the field at large. An advanced degree is preferred and professional experience is required. APPOINTMENT DATE: August 2012.

The Department of Design in the College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University invites applications for a regular, tenure-track position at the assistant or associate rank in Industrial Design effective August 2012. Candidates should have a terminal master degree (MFA, MS, MID, etc.), along with at least five years of relevant experience in teaching and/or serving the professional industry. Competitive candidates will possess an ability to balance theory and practice with a proven record of extensive knowledge in one or more of the following areas: computer-aided design, experience design, design thinking, user centered design, and design research. An established or clearly-emerging national and/or international reputation in the field is expected. Teaching will be predominantly in the Industrial Design major program, and undergraduate/graduate student advising will be expected. 3D computer-modeling (preferably Solidworks) and digital rendering expertise are expected for this position. Salary will be negotiable and competitive, commensurate with experience.

Position:   Chinese Language and Pedagogy - China Centers in Shanghai and Qingdao

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures (DEALL) in the College of Arts and Sciences at the Ohio State University invites applications for a regular, tenured/tenure-track position at the rank of Associate Professor in Chinese language and culture pedagogy effective August 2012. This position involves assuming responsibility for planning and implementing advanced level training in Mandarin and preparing students for domain-specific work and placing them in internships in Chinese organizations. In addition to language training, teaching includes courses in traditional and contemporary Chinese culture and language pedagogy. Advising includes undergraduate projects, Master’s theses (in English for students from China and in Chinese for non-native Chinese speakers), and Ph.D. dissertations in Chinese language pedagogy. Research should focus on the knowledge and behavioral demands confronting non-native speakers seeking professional level competencies in contemporary China, issues of cross-culture communication between Americans and Chinese, and the development of pedagogical instruments for training in these areas. The Department of Physics in the College of Arts & Sciences at The Ohio State University is seeking candidates for two tenure track faculty appointments effective Fall Semester 2012. Highly qualified candidates in all areas of theoretical particle physics and experimental biophysics are invited to apply. In theoretical particle physics, we are especially interested in candidates with expertise in physics beyond the standard model, and with a strong interest in interacting with experimentalists working at the Large Hadron Collider and in astrophysical contexts. In experimental biophysics, we are most interested in candidates skilled at using in vivo techniques to complement our existing in vitro and in silico efforts. While we are primarily searching for tenure track Assistant Professor candidates, we may consider exceptionally well-qualified applicants for tenured appointments. Applicants should have a Ph.D. and an outstanding research record. A commitment to excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels is essential.

The Department of Theatre and the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD) in the College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University invite applications for a regular, tenure-track position at the assistant professor rank, effective August 2012. We seek an educator/scholar/artist who is practiced in the art of media design (imagery, lighting, sound, interactivity) for live performances and installations. This faculty member will join an established and experienced interdisciplinary collaborative (Theatre, ACCAD, Dance, Music, Art, Design) in which advanced studio/laboratory facilities are already in place for expanding hands-on teaching and learning in media design for undergraduate and graduate students in performing and visual arts. In concert with faculty in collaborating departments and centers, the successful candidate must be able to prepare students for media design for plays, musicals, dance, installations, theme parks, museums, architecture, boutique retail, mall properties, restaurants, corporate presentations, and concerts. This individual will incorporate media research and design projects within the classroom and within our production design laboratory of our season of live performances. They will also expand our expertise in this area of inquiry, partner with other units to incorporate performance technology, broaden our collaborative potential and innovative partnerships and advance the field through control, distribution, and integration techniques. Our new colleague will contribute: In Research/Creative Activity: creating, collaborating, expanding, criticizing, commenting, and evaluating productions, media research and design projects; In Teaching: designing course work which trains undergraduate and graduate students in the performing and visual arts for the aesthetic and technical possibilities of immersive visual entertainment; In Service: demonstrating leadership in undergraduate and graduate programs, curriculum development, advising, and governance within the department, ACCAD, college, university and field at large.
 
Qualifications include experience in large and small scale projection design, video, lighting, sound and interactive design for performance and installations; hands-on knowledge in current technologies and applications; forward thinking and integration of emerging developments in the field. Artists with industry ties, professional experience and teaching experience are preferred. A terminal degree (MFA or PhD) is required.
