Staff Grants and Awards

Staff Grants

1) Staff Professional Development Grants

General Focus: to support professional enrichment or development opportunities and specialized activities that re-focus the development or enhance the capacity of staff to perform at high levels of excellence, such as:
  • Expenses for participation in seminars, workshops, conferences, training programs, or meetings
  • Books, software, or materials related to the areas of professional development
  • Equipment that broadens or deepens skills or advances an applicant’s professional development or career aspirations
  • Child/elder care expenses necessary for participation in professional development opportunities/activities
Deadlines: Annually, application deadlines are:
  • January 31
  • April 30
  • September 30
If any of the deadlines fall on a weekend, then applications will be due the following Monday. Applications submitted in the summer will be considered after the autumn quarter deadline.

Application Process: Applicants may complete the online application form and cover letter. Information provided should include:

  • Cover page.
  • One-page description of how the proposed activity/materials/equipment meets the stated purpose of the grants program.
  • Explanation of the connection between the request and how it: supports professional growth and development in the particular area; advances an existing skills set or develops new skills; forwards a short- or long-term professional goal.
  • Short description of the applicant and the applicant’s role in the unit.
  • A timeline, as appropriate, for a proposed activity.
  • Detailed budget and documentation of all costs, including a specification of any funds received from other sources (other grant opportunities, personal funds, etc.).
  • Letter of support from the applicant’s chair/director/dean that includes:
    • A statement of support for the proposal and for the time allotted for the project to be considered university time.
    • A confirmation of a minimum of $100 in unit funds, or, if the amount requested is less than $200, a confirmation that half of the total budget will be supported by the unit.

Selection Process: Applications will be reviewed three times annually by the ASC Staff Advisory Committee, who will submit recommendations to the Executive Dean.

Funding: The funding is anticipated to support 15 grants annually at up to $500 each in matching funding.

2) Office of the Executive Dean Professional Development Program

General Focus: to support professional development opportunities for ASC staff in units that report directly to the Office of the Executive Dean for activities that might include but are not limited to:
  • Tuition assistance
  • Membership in professional organizations
  • Participation in national, regional, and local workshops and conferences.

Deadline: ASC staff members who report to the Office of the Executive Dean may submit applications at any time during the academic year.

Application Process: Applicants may complete the online application and evaluation forms.

Selection Process: Applications will be reviewed by a subcommittee of the ASC Office of the Executive Dean Staff Advisory Committee with recommendations to the Executive Dean.

Outstanding Staff Awards

General Focus: to recognize staff members in the arts and sciences (with three or more years of service in the arts and sciences) who have made exceptional accomplishments, displayed leadership, or provided exemplary service.

Deadline: May 31

Application Process: Nominators may complete the online nomination form. Information provided should:

  • Demonstrate the nominee’s sustained excellence in overall job performance.
  • Confirm that that the nominee has improved or enhanced work life and services to faculty, staff, students, and/or the university.
  • Confirm that the nominee has enhanced the visibility of the arts and sciences through interdisciplinary connections and/or community service.
  • Include up to two letters of support from colleagues who have personal knowledge of and have benefitted from the nominee’s contributions.

Selection Process: Applications will be reviewed by the ASC Staff Advisory Committee with recommendations to the Executive Dean.

Funding: The funding for this program supports six one-time awards at $1,000 each.
