The Ohio State University Foreign Language Center (FLC) is the premier institution for the study of languages and cultures in our nation. The center is a pioneer in the development of collaborative distance learning and innovative foreign language software programs and has the longest running individualized language programs in the country.
At a Glance
Offers nine language programs specializing in self-directed learning: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish
Trains high school teachers and Ohio State graduate students in media literacy, foreign language media, and technology to create online foreign language modules
Coordinates the National Security Education Program (NSEP) Boren Scholarships, funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to add an international and language component to their education
Recognized among the top 10 universities for NSEP Boren Fellowship Awards for the 2010-2011 academic year

Mudbrick Skyscrapers
The Foreign Language Center is hosting an exhibit in the Global Gallery, Hagerty Hall, during winter quarter. The show, Mudbrick Skyscrapers: The Traditional Architecture of Yemen, is a collection of photos documenting the unique architectural heritage in Yemen, from the walled city of Shibam, a UNESCO World Heritage site of approximately 500 houses which rise up to ten storeies from the wadi floor, to the stone palace of Imam Yahya.

The World Media and Culture Center
is a facility that integrates international satellite television, radio, print media, the Internet, and multimedia instructional materials into the traditional classroom environment. Includes:

Foreign Language Ohio Resource Center
provides lessons, tests, and resources that make the Ohio Foreign Language Standards accessible to Ohio’s language classrooms and helps students become proficient in a language
Foreign Language Publications Center
is a not-for-profit publisher, distributor, and retailer of foreign language materials for students and instructors
Collective Articulation and Assessment Program (CAAP)
provides early assessment to high school juniors in Ohio in four languages: Chinese, French, German, and Spanish. It also provides varied professional development opportunities for language instructors
Strategic Partnerships
New Albany High School
Fourth-quarter Ohio State Spanish students and their fourth-year counterparts at New Albany High School study Spanish language and culture together via the Hall Videoconferencing Center
Lorain County Community College (LCCC)
The center offers distance learning classes in several languages not available to students at LCCC
Events
Go Local Go Global
is a series of events organized by the FLC in collaboration with Ohio State’s language departments featuring “celebrity moderators” for roundtable conversations that provides students an opportunity to practice foreign language skills
Langfest
is an annual fall festival celebrating cultures from around the globe with food, performances, and history
