Clusters Frequently Asked Questions

How much work are Clusters courses?

Clusters courses are just like any other GEC class in terms of workload. However, some clusters courses which are taken concurrently have a single large project due for both.

Can I enroll in more than one cluster?

Yes, clusters courses fulfill GEC requirements from a variety of areas. Each cluster has its own theme and fulfills different GEC requirements.

How many classes do I need to take to complete a cluster?

Most clusters consist of two to three classes. Please check individual clusters listings for details.

Do I have to take a cluster?

No, clusters are not required. However, they do fulfill GEC requirements.

Can I take one clusters class if I do not intend to take the other classes in the cluster?

Yes, these courses are open to all students, but these courses were designed to go together and it may be difficult to understand the message of an individual course without taking the other courses as well. This is why we strongly encourage students to continue with the cluster.

How do I register for a cluster?

You register for clusters just like your other courses. Please check individual clusters listings for details. If you would like to be pre-enrolled for the next clusters course in a sequence, please email Jessica Mercerhill at mercerhill.1@osu.edu.

Why should I take a cluster?

Clusters fulfill GEC requirements while allowing you to explore a topic that interests you. While other GEC classes may consist of isolated topics, these classes allow you to fully explore an area of interest by examining a question from the viewpoint of multiple disciplines.
