Short Description: The Department of Dance and The Ohio Arts Council proudly co-sponsor a lecture with Arthur Mitchell. An inspirational speaker, Mitchell will share stories from his remarkable life as a pioneering leader in American dance. A renowned performer and choreographer, Mitchell was the first African American principal dancer with New York City Ballet under George Balanchine. He is better known as the founder and Artistic Director of Dance Theatre of Harlem, the first permanently established African American ballet company in America.

Open to the public, the Department of Dance, the Ohio Arts Council and The Barnett Center for Arts and Enterprise are pleased to share the opportunity to meet this living legacy. Mitchell has been recognized as a MacArthur Fellow, inducted into the National Museum of Dance Hall of Fame, and has received the United States National Medal of Arts and a Fletcher Foundation fellowship.
