Jay T. Dolmage will deliver a public talk entitled “Academic Abelism and Eugenic Education.” He is committed to disability rights in his scholarship, service and teaching. His first book, Disability Rhetoric, brings together rhetorical theory and history, composition theory, disability studies and critical pedagogy. He is currently completing two new book projects: Academic Abelism, examining the roots and branches of eugenics in North American higher education; and Disabled Upon Arrival, examining the rhetorical co-construction of race and disability in immigration promotion and restriction. Dolmage is also founding editor of the Canadian Journal of Disability Studies, chair of the College Composition and Communication Committee on Disability Issues and travels frequently to give workshops on Universal Design in teaching and learning.
