"Pop This Time." Borrowing their program title from the albums This Time By Basie and Pop Goes The Basie from the 1960s, this performance by the Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Kris Keith is all about big-band jazz meeting the world of pop music. Usually very touchy ground for jazz, these '60s Basie recordings along with the amazing arrangements by Quincy Jones and Billy Byers took the pop tunes of their time to new and exciting places. This program explores new efforts in the same direction with the music of RadioHead, Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. Along with the contemporary arrangements will be a straight-ahead nod to the past with Count Basie and Frank Sinatra. Local talent Phil Clark will perform as guest vocalist with the Jazz Ensemble for the first time. Clark has been performing the repertoire of Frank Sinatra and Ray Charles regularly with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra; he brings the "soul" like no one else!Visit the School of Music for details.
