Short Description: Lawrie Balfour, Professor of Politics at the University of Virginia, will give a talk entitled "Repairing the Carceral Polity." How does the rise of mass incarceration change democracy? What are its effects on citizens and immigrants who are not incarcerated? Balfour will address these questions by considering how the idea of reparations illuminates the interrelation of race, punishment, and democracy.
