Día de los Muertos arises out of the contact between indigenous and European Spanish cultures. Although the customs and symbols most frequently observed in the United States are adaptations of Mexican practices and aesthetics, the day is connected to diverse meanings and rituals throughout Latin America. The images in YA VIENEN LOS MUERTOS/HERE COME THE DEAD in Hagerty Hall’s Global Gallery and in the Thompson Library engage and examine different customs from around the Americas that contribute to the celebration of this holiday. Observed on the first two days of November, the season is filled with preparations to welcome the souls of the departed. Unlike Halloween in the United States, Día de los Muertos is both a time of thoughtful remembrance and joyful revelry.  The symbolism is not meant to be frightening, and it maintains robust ties to indigenous spirituality. Events:  “Día de los Muertos: Art, Education and Activism”Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2-3:30 p.m.Thompson Library, Room 150Artist lecture by Gabriela Pickett and performances by Andean Music Ensemble"Ya Vienen los Muertos: Face Painting and Food"Saturday, Nov. 5, 11 a.m to 12 p.m.Gateway Film Center "Ya Vienen los Muertos Film Screening: The Book of Life"Saturday, Nov. 5, 12-1:45 p.m. Gateway Film Center"Ya Vienen los Muertos: Exhibit Viewing"Saturday, Nov. 5, 2-2:45 p.m.Thompson LibraryExhibit featuring José Guadalupe Posada Broadsides and guest artists Adam Hernandez, José Chema Nieto, Diana Solis, and Mabi Ponce de León."Ya Vienen los Muertos: Exhibit Viewing and Meet & Greet with Visiting Artists"Saturday, Nov. 5, 3-4 p.m.Hagerty Hall Lobby, Global GalleryExhibit Viewing: Ya Vienen los Muertos, with curator Paloma Martinez-CruzMeet & Greet with Visiting Artists: Adam Hernandez, José Chema Nieto, Diana Solis, and Mabi Ponce de LeónPlease contact the Department of Spanish and Portuguese for more information.  Various College of Arts and Sciences asccomm@osu.edu America/New_York public
