Arts and Sciences Students Recognized by Goldwater Scholarship/Excellence in Education Program

Goldwater

Three arts and sciences students were recognized by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program. Alexis Crockett, a junior honors student in neuroscience (cellular and molecular track) and psychology; and Henry Tran, a junior honors student majoring in chemistry and mathematics, were named 2015 Goldwater Scholars. Lucas Beaufore, a junior honors student in engineering physics, received an Honorable Mention.

The Goldwater is the top national award for undergraduate researchers in science, mathematics and engineering, based on academic merit. Goldwater Scholars receive an award covering tuition, fees, books and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500. Two hundred-sixty sophomores and juniors received Goldwater scholarships from the more than 1,000 mathematics, science and engineering students nominated by colleges and universities nationwide. An additional 269 Honorable Mentions were awarded.

Alexis

In 2012, Crockett received the university’s new Eminence Fellowship and in 2014, was selected an Undergraduate Research Fellow for her work, “The Effects of Insulin in the Brain and in Influencing the Neuroinflammatory Response and Memory in Young and Aged Rats.” Previous lab work resulted in a poster presentation at the 2014 Society for Neuroscience Annual Meeting and co-authorship on three publications in The Journal of Neuroscience and Brain, Behavior, and Immunity.

This summer, Crockett will continue studies on the neurobiology of depression as a DAAD RISE (Research Internships in Science and Engineering) intern at the Karlsruher Institut Für Technologie in Erlangen, Germany.

Crockett is active in neuroscience and STEM educational outreach on campus and in the Columbus community. She plans to receive a PhD in neuroscience and seek a faculty position at a research university to study the pathophysiology of depression and contribute to the development of more effective antidepressants.

Henry
Henry Tran is conducting research on Jahn-Teller distortions of the NO3 molecule in the theoretical chemistry lab of Terry Miller, Ohio Eminent Scholar, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Tran presented his analysis of the NO3 spectrum’s rotational structure at the 2014 International Symposium on Molecular Spectroscopy.

Previously, Tran conducted theoretical mathematics research with his advisor, Sergei Chmutov, professor, mathematics (Mansfield), in the Knots and Graphs Working Group. He has received a number of grants for research and academic performance, including an Honors Undergraduate Research Scholarship; the Gary Booth Chemistry Scholarship; the Sophomore Organic Chemistry Award and the Goldstein Mathematics Scholarship.

An Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) Scholar, Tran serves as an ODI peer mentor and an honors peer mentor. After receiving a PhD in physical chemistry, he plans to teach and conduct research on the electronic structures of complex molecules.

Lucas Beaufore, a junior honors student in engineering physics, conducts instrument verification research with Ohio State participants in the Dark Energy Survey (DES), an international collaboration supported by funding from the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation. His advisor is Physics Professor Klaus Honscheid.

Last summer, Beaufore helped develop a laser system at the Ultrafast Nanophotonics Group at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München in Munich, Germany, through the DAAD’s RISE program (Research Internships in Science and Engineering). He has been awarded a Physics Summer Research Scholarship; the Physics’ Smith Sophomore Award and the Physics’ Helen Cowan Book Award. He won first place at the 2014 Denman Undergraduate Research Forum.

A member of the Honors Collegium, Beaufore is active in the Society of Physics Students, the Engineering Council and FIRST Robotics Mentoring. He plans to pursue a PhD in applied physics and a research career in either government or the private sector developing technology and instrumentation for space exploration.
