We are fortunate in the arts and sciences. Our departments centers, and institutes enjoy outstanding reputations, due, in large part, to the dedication, passion and talent among our deans, chairs and directors. This autumn, we have many new appointments and reinstatements to announce.

New Leadership
 

Divisional Dean; Arts and Humanities, Outreach and Engagement

In June 2015, the college announced the appointment of Peter Hahn as the new Arts and Humanities Divisional Dean, effective July 1, 2015. Professor of history, Hahn served as chair of the department since 2006. During his tenure as chair, Hahn created unique study-abroad opportunities for undergraduates; developed innovative career trajectories for graduate students; offered online resources and free, public lectures for educators and the public; and supported faculty research, attracting two new endowed chairs.

AAAS COMMUNITY EXTENSION CENTER
LINDA JAMES MYERS, DIRECTOR

Professor of African American and African Studies, Myers is an internationally recognized scholar and cultural critic whose research and production of culturally syntonic psychological knowledge places Africana Studies at the forefront of the paradigm shift. (Appointment effective May 1, 2015-April 30, 2019.)

REBECCA HARVEY, CHAIR

Professor of art, Harvey’s work has been recognized by numerous awards, including a Greater Columbus Arts Council Award and several Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Awards. (Appointment effective Sept. 1, 2015-Aug. 31, 2019.)

DAVID WEINBERG, CHAIR

The Henry L. Cox Professor in astronomy and Distinguished Professor of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Weinberg is an observationally oriented theorist and works mainly on large-scale structure, galaxy formation, the intergalactic medium and observational probes of the matter and energy content and initial conditions of the universe. (Appointment July 1, 2015-May 31, 2019.

DANCE, DEPARTMENT OF
SUSAN HADLEY, CHAIR

Professor of dance, Hadley teaches modern technique, composition, repertory and pedagogy. She was a principal dancer with the Mark Morris Dance Group, a member of Senta Driver's company, HARRY, and she performed with Meredith Monk. (Appointment effective Sept. 1, 2015-Aug. 31, 2019)

FILM STUDIES
RYAN FRIEDMAN, DIRECTOR

Associate professor of English, Friedman is a member of the Interdisciplinary Film Studies Committee. He specializes in early African American film and the racial politics of classical Hollywood, while teaching courses and writing on a range of other topics. (Appointment effective Sept. 1, 2015-Aug. 31, 2018.)

MORTON O’KELLY, CHAIR

Professor of geography, O’Kelly served as chair of the Department of Geography from 2003 to 2011 and was instrumental in the establishment of the Center for Urban and Regional Analysis (CURA). (Appointment effective July 1, 2105-May 31, 2019.)

NATHAN ROSENSTEIN, INTERIM CHAIR

Professor of history, Rosenstein is a specialist in the history of the Roman Republic and early Empire. He has been a member of the Department of History since 1986. (Appointment effective July 1, 2015-May 31, 2016.)

HUMAN RESOURCE RESEARCH, CENTER FOR (CHRR)
ELIZABETH COOKSEY, DIRECTOR

Professor of sociology and principal investigator for the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 (NLSY79), Cooksey’s current research focuses on adolescent sexual and contraceptive behaviors; effects of parents’ lives on children; and religious beliefs and behaviors of youth. Cooksey is president of the Society for Longitudinal and Life Course Studies. (Appointment July 1, 2015-June 30, 2019.)

GARY WENK, DIRECTOR

Wenk is professor of psychology and neuroscience and molecular virology, immunology and medical genetics. He also is a member of the Ohio State Center for Brain and Spinal Cord Repair. (Appointment effective Sept. 1, 2015-Aug. 31, 2019.)

JOHN BRUNO, CHAIR

Bruno is professor of psychology, neuroscience and psychiatry. He served as director of the Neuroscience Undergraduate Program prior to his appointment as chair. (Appointment effective Sept. 1, 2015-May 31, 2019.)

SLAVIC AND EAST EUROPEAN STUDIES, CENTER FOR
JOSEPH BRANDESKY, DIRECTOR

Brandesky is the Martha W. Farmer endowed professor in the Department of Theatre at Ohio State Lima. Brandesky has long been involved in Russian and Czech theatre; he served as associate director for the center during 2013-14. (Appointment effective Sept. 1, 2015-Aug. 31, 2016.)

CLAUDIA BUCHMANN, CHAIR

Professor of sociology, Buchmann is a leading scholar in the sociology of education field and the nation’s foremost expert on women’s rising status in higher education. (Appointment effective June 1, 2015-May 31, 2019.)

STATISTICS, DEPARTMENT OF
STEVE MACEACHERN, CHAIR

Professor of statistics with a courtesy appointment in psychology, MacEachern is a fellow of the American Statistical Association and a member of the International Statistical Institute. (Appointment effective July 1, 2015-May 31, 2019.)

STUDY OF RELIGION, CENTER FOR THE
HUGH URBAN, DIRECTOR

Professor of comparative studies, Urban is interested in the study of secrecy in religion, particularly in relation to questions of knowledge and power. He has a strong secondary interest in contemporary new religious movements. (Appointment effective Sept. 1, 2015-June 30, 2016.)

URBAN AND REGIONAL ANALYSIS, CENTER FOR
HARVEY MILLER, DIRECTOR

The Bob and Mary Reusche Chair in Geographic Information Science and professor of geography, Miller’s research and teaching focus on the intersection between geographic information science and transportation science. He also is interested in the social dimensions of transportation, the relationships between mobility and public health and data-driven urban science to support livable and sustainable communities. (Appointment July 1, 2015-May 31, 2019.)

WOMEN’S, GENDER AND SEXUALITY STUDIES, DEPARTMENT OF
GUISELA LATORRE, INTERIM CHAIR

Associate Professor of Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies, Latorre is a specialist in modern/contemporary Chicana/o and Latin American art with emphasis on gender and feminism. (Appointment effective Sept. 1, 2015-Aug. 31, 2016.)
