Center for the Study and Teaching of Writing (CSTW) Supports Dissertation Writing

For the fourth year, the Center for the Study and Teaching of Writing (CSTW) is offering support for dissertation writing.

"This year we received three times the number of applications for dissertation support as we have in past years," said CSTW director Richard (Dickie) Selfe. "Because our goal is to increase the quantity and quality of writing research across campus, this growth is a very good sign."

The following dissertation projects chosen for support are:

YiBoon Chang (Foreign, Second, & Multilingual Language Education)

Conceptualizing L2 Writing Response Activities in College ESL Composition Classes: An Activity Theoretical Perspective

Ying-Hsueh Cheng (Foreign, Second, & Multilingual Language Education)

Nonnative-English speaking Doctoral Students' Dissertation Writing Practices across Disciplines at a Midwestern U.S. University

Martha Christiansen (Education and Human Ecology - Teaching and Learning)

College-age second-generation transnational Mexicans and their engagement with writing: An ethnographic portrait

Deborah Kuzawa (English)

The literacy practices of non-traditional adult students who are gender minorities

Sarah Mendenhall (English)

Locating the Profession: A History of Professionalization in Composition

The CSTW is happy to be involved in supporting quality writing research across campus. We plan to put out the next call for grant applications in the first week of September, 2012," Dr. Selfe added.

The Writing Center at CSTW offers free help with writing at any stage of the writing process for any member of the university community. CSTW staff provide tutorial support on a number of projects, from research papers to lab reports, from dissertations to resumes, from proposals to application materials.
