Elizabeth Cooksey Elected President of Society for Longitudinal and Life Course Studies

Elizabeth Cooksey, professor of sociology and associate director, Center for Human Resource Research (CHRR), was elected president of the Society for Longitudinal and Life Course Studies at its annual meeting held in Paris, in October 2012. The Society has members from 26 countries worldwide and her term of office runs for two years.

Cooksey is the principal investigator of the NLSY79 (National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979) Child and Young Adult data collections and was awarded a five-year grant for $7.5 million in February from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). Much of her research focuses on adolescent sexual and fertility related behaviors and on intergenerational connections across the life course. Her current research projects include a cross-national study of the effects of working mothers on children’s academic achievements and behaviors; how relationships affect sexual and contraceptive decision-making among adolescents, and a demographic analysis of the Amish.

In July, Professor Cooksey lobbied on Capitol Hill to preserve the American Community Survey and represented the Population Association of American and APC at a congressional reception to celebrate 50 years of research at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Cooksey presented a poster titled: The NLSY79 Child and Young Adult Survey.

Cooksey earned a PhD and MA in sociology at Brown University.
