GRASP the Possibilities
The Physics Department is on to something. Now in its fourth year, its popular week-long camp for middle-school girls, Girls Reaching to Achieve in Sports and Physics (GRASP), illuminates the excitement of physics.
What does physics have to do with sports? Quite a lot, as the campers quickly find out.
Each day, lectures followed by interactive demonstrations and projects--such as making gliders and launching them off the Physics Building’s Atrium balconies--matched with physical activities (archery, wall-climbing, swimming, football)--illustrate different principles of physics.
Hosted by the undergraduate program and the Society of Women in Physics with support of faculty and student volunteers, GRASP shows the fun of physics, how it relates to everyday phenomena—like sports--and ignites an interest in science. The hope is that this will pay off with increased numbers of women preparing for careers in physics.
