Popular Music Celebration Concert to be Staged December 3

The School of Music’s popular musical extravaganza, the 21st Annual Music Celebration Concert, will ring in the holiday season with a broad range of music and scores of Ohio State student performers. Because of the way the calendar falls, the concert is being presented on a Tuesday for this year only – on December 3 at 8 pm in Mershon Auditorium on campus.

The concert showcases nearly all of the school’s student ensembles—from its Symphony Orchestra and Glee Clubs to the Jazz Ensemble, Chorale, Wind Symphony, soloists, and more—in a fast-paced, non-stop collage setting.

Says Richard Blatti, director of the School of Music, “Why is this our favorite concert of the year? Because it brings our students and faculty together to create something bigger than each of us—a sort of musical kaleidoscope, which showcases what performers can do when they collaborate for the sheer enjoyment of making music.”

A few specific selections that will be featured in the concert include Moment’s Notice by John Coltrane (Jazz Ensemble), O Beata Trinitas by Jacob Handl (Men’s Glee Club), The Night Before Christmas by Randol Alan Bass (Wind Symphony with Sebastian Knowles, narrator), A Tribute to Middle Earth by Howard Shore (Horn Ensemble), Ring Out, Wild Bells by Jonathan Dove (Symphonic Choir), Brazilian Batacuda (Percussion Ensemble) and many more. As is its tradition, the concert will conclude with Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus from Messiah, with the Symphony Orchestra, Men’s Glee Club, Women’s Glee Club, and Symphonic Choir.

Tickets are $20 for the general public (reserved seating); $10 senior citizens, Alumni Association members and children. Free for Ohio State students, faculty and staff, 1 ticket per BuckID presented in person (subject to availability).
