School of Music Presents Popular Drums Downtown

The Ohio State University School of Music presents Drums Downtown IX, featuring the music of Steve Reich, at 8 pm Friday, February 24 and Saturday, February 25, downtown at the Riffe Center's Capitol Theatre, 77 South High St. The popular annual event spotlights the OSU Percussion Ensemble, with guest choreographers and performers from Ohio State's Department of Dance, and instrumentalists and vocalists from the School of Music.

According to Susan Powell and Joseph Krygier, artistic directors, Drums Downtown IX will feature the music of Pulitzer Prize-winning guest composer-in-residence Steve Reich. The diverse program represents a cross-section of Reich's work over the past 40 years, and will culminate in a complete performance of his monumental work, Drumming.

The full program includes:
Nagoya Marimbas
City Life
Clapping Music
Tehillim
Drumming.

Choreographers are Meghan Durham (Drumming, Part II), Bebe Miller (Drumming, Part III), Susan Hadley (Drumming, Part IV), and Ann Sofie Clemmensen (Tehillim). New 3D computer animation by Alan Price, from the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD) and Department of Design, will accompany Reich's composition City Life.

A pre-concert discussion begins both evenings at 7:15 pm with Russell Hartenberger, an original member of Steve Reich and Musicians.
