Speech and Hearing Science Professor Tapped for Erskine Fellowship

Michelle Bourgeois, professor, speech and hearing science, has been awarded an Erskine Fellowship to teach in the Department of Communication Disorders at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand, during spring term 2013. Each year, 75 distinguished, international academic visitors are invited to the University of Canterbury for one to three months for the purpose of lecturing in their area of expertise. Bourgeois will also present a keynote address at the Australian Alzheimer’s Association conference on May 15 in Hobart, Tasmania.

Bourgeois is one of the top national figures in functional approaches to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia. With support from the National Institutes of Aging and the Alzheimer's Association, Bourgeois is leading the effort to systematically investigate the use of memory aids with persons with dementia residing at home and in institutional settings. Her book, Memory Books and Other Graphic Cuing Systems (NY: Health Professions Protocol) was awarded the 2008 National Mature Media Award by Health Professions Press.

In 2010, Bourgeois was honored by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) with a Fellow of the Association, one of the highest honors ASHA bestows, for outstanding contributions to the discipline of communication sciences and disorders.
