Undergraduate Named Goldwater Scholar

Johnny Greco, a junior majoring in physics and astronomy, has been named a 2012 Goldwater Scholar, the highest award for an undergraduate researcher in science, math, or engineering. The Goldwater award includes a $7,500 scholarship.

Greco has conducted research with Dr. Paul Martini in astronomy and Dr. Richard Hughes in physics.

Greco's astronomy research focuses on the regulation mechanisms of star formation in galaxies; his high-particle physics research analyzed proton-antiproton collisions in the search for the Higgs boson, sometimes called "the God particle."

A recipient of the Undergraduate Research Scholarship and the Physics Smith Sophomore Award, Greco plans to attend graduate school for a PhD in physics. His long-range goal is to conduct research at the intersection of astrophysics and particle physics as a professor at a research institution.
