Arts and Sciences Partners with Columbus Public Schools in Columbus Teaching Academy
On August 29, 15 seniors from 9 different high schools begin the second year of the Columbus Teaching Academy, a partnership between Columbus Public Schools and the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences. Graduates of last year's class are attending colleges in Ohio and across the country, including Bowling Green, Miami of Ohio, Virginia State, Howard, Central State and Ohio State.
For the start of this year's program, young women and young men considering
a career in education meet with their CPS teacher, Deborah Kidwell, every
afternoon in the Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center. Throughout the
school year, they will meet at different sites across campus, including the
Central Classroom Building and Sullivant Learning Commons. In addition to
studying education as a career, students will serve internships in CPS
elementary and middle schools and work with Ohio State Arts and Sciences
faculty, staff, and students in pre-college enrichment activities. Some of
those activities include:
- discussion of the ASC Buckeye Book Community selection, What is the What by Dave Eggars
- meeting with ASC advisors and current Ohio State students to discuss college expectations
- workshops with Columbus Teaching Academy Faculty Friends that include the Mathematics and Statistical Learning Center, Foreign Language Center, College of Biological Sciences Greenhouse, Wexner Center for the Arts, Department of English, Center for the Study and Teaching of Writing, and Arts and Sciences Middle Childhood Education program.
