Event Host: Department of English
The Department of English will host Terri Francis, associate professor, communication and culture, Indiana University, for a lecture titled, “Josephine Baker’s Animated Burlesque: Cinema, Performance, and the Question of Agency.” The lecture comes from her forthcoming book on Josephine Baker, which analyzes Baker's creativity in the context of early African American vaudeville stagings as it proposes a new theory of burlesque — a theory that allows scholars to understand the cultural anxieties that come to the fore in burlesque’s representations of race- and gender-based inequalities, humor, and eroticism.
