The Department of English will host the annual Kane Lecture on Thursday, April 9, 2015, featuring D.A.Miller, John F. Hotchkis Professor of English at the University of California, Berkeley. Miller's lecture is titled, "The Long Wrong Man."
If close, careful examination of texts, films, and images defines a critic’s work, is it possible to look too closely and too carefully? In his lecture, D. A. Miller explores this question while he performs a “slow-motion” analysis of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1956 film The Wrong Man – a film that itself tells a story of close and not-close-enough looking. Miller reveals The Wrong Man’s fractures, discontinuities, and doubles; in so doing, he shows how a prolonged viewing of Hitchcock’s work allows us to see, for the first time, the director’s secret style.
An informal reception will take place in 311 Denney after Miller's lecture. Light snacks and coffee will be served.
