Sharon Ryan, Director Nurse-Midwifery and Women's Health Specialty and Assistant Professor of Clinical Nursing at The Ohio State University, presents "Midwifery: Art, Science & Popular Culture."

This presentation will provide a historical and contemporary context of midwifery practice in the US with a focus on the profession of nurse-midwifery. Highlights from the popular series “Call the Midwife” will be used to illustrate points and engage the audience.

Dr. Ryan is a certified nurse-midwife with over 15 years of clinical experience in the United States and internationally. Dr. Ryan’s clinical focus is on the provision of evidenced-based care to vulnerable populations in low resource and remote settings. Dr. Ryan has attended births in homes, birth centers and hospitals in Appalachia, remote rural New Zealand and in an Alaska above the Arctic Circle and has participated in maternal health projects in Haiti, Indonesia, Ethiopia, and Honduras.
