The panel will be moderated by former WOSU radio host Fred Anderle. PANELISTS: Dr. Elise Berlan, adolescent health expert, Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Assistant professor of clinical pediatrics, The Ohio State University Kelly Dillion, doctoral candidate and cyber-bullying expert, The Ohio State Univeristy School of Communication Dr. Jeannie Nuss, features reporter, The Columbus Dispatch Parents, educators, and health professionals have increasingly become worried about the prevalence of bullying among school-age children and youth. Over a quarter of American students report being bullied each school year. This bullying no longer is confined to the school yard as it has migrated online and onto our children’s mobile phones and tablets. In 2014 the Center for Disease Control reported that 15% of high school students reported being bullied online. Two-thirds of children never report being bullied to their parents or teachers, leaving the vast majority to deal with it on their own. In turn, research shows that bullied kids have substantially increased risk for a range of mental health, physical health and educational problems —including suicide. So how do we help our children deal with bullying? How do we prevent it from occurring in the first place? What causes it? How do we recognize the signs of unreported bullying? How do we empower children to intervene and stop it when they see it taking place? The event is free and open to the general public with seating beginning at 6:30pm. Attendees will be able to participate in the panel discussion Presented by Health Science Frontiers (www.hsf.osu.edu). Health Science Frontiers is funded by a generous grant from The Ohio State University Office of Outreach & Engagement and by the Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital. It is organized in partnership between Ohio State's School of Communication, The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital, WOSU@COSI and COSI. -- WOSU@COSI, 333 W.
