Microbiology; Internship

What were your responsibilities?
I tested Nestle products to ensure that they were safe, that they satisfied health guidelines and that they met Nestle standards for quality. We performed tests for common food borne pathogens. I was able to observe many parts of this process including the preparation of samples for general and pathogen testing.

How did your major program and your time at Ohio State prepare you for this internship?
Through my classes at OSU I was prepared to use aseptic technique in the lab. My OSU biology courses were also very beneficial because they familiarized me with several pathogens.

What did you gain from the experience that will be valuable to you in the future?
Through this internship, I was able to experience a microbiology laboratory in an industrial and professional setting. This experience will be extremely beneficial to me when I am looking for a job after graduation. Additionally, I learned a great number of applicable techniques and general laboratory practices that will be very relevant for future use.

What was your favorite part of the internship?
I really enjoyed shadowing coworkers in several labs within the facility. It was very exciting for me to see firsthand the variety of positions that are available within the microbiology field. I also enjoyed the hands-on experience of being in a lab. It was incredible that I was able to put my knowledge of microbiology to use in a professional setting. Additionally, the staff members within NQAC were extremely helpful. They were willing to help me make connections and to help me set goals for my future. They really encouraged me to pursue my passions.

What advice would you give students who are considering an internship?
I would tell them to go for it! If they find a position that they might be interested in, I would encourage them to explore it now so that they can discover if it is what they may want to do for a career. Additionally, internships are amazing places to meet others in your field and to network, so don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and make connections!
