Ece Karaca

Ece Karaca, a graduate student in design from Ankara, Turkey, recently won first place in the 31st Hayes Research Forum. The Edward F. Hayes Graduate Research Forum showcases the innovative and exemplary research being conducted by Ohio State graduate students across the full range of graduate degree programs and facilitates. Karaca won first place under the Arts for her thesis research, Interactive Information Design: An application used to illuminate the environmental effects of the Syrian War. Karaca also was one of the winners of the 2017 Ohio Celebration of Women in Computing (OCWIC) conference poster competition for her collaborative project, OSUPD Training Video: A Visual Representation of a Crime Scene for Training Purposes.

What is your thesis research and how did you come up with the idea?

I’m very interested in information design and data visualization. After starting the graduate program, my focus shifted to the integration of emerging technologies in design. While working on practice-based research, as a case study I focused on visualizing the environmental issues the Syrian war has caused. The original work is exhibited in an interactive format at ACCAD (the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design), and I demonstrated the project on a big-scale, multitouch screen. Also, I presented my thesis process at the Hayes Research Forum. I am still working on my research and case study applications, especially application improvements. Additionally, I started working on a second case study on the environmental effects of makeshift oil infrastructure in Syria.

What was your project for OCWIC?

I worked on a video representation for the Ohio State Police Division. It was a collaborative project, and the main purpose was recounting events in a crime scene and preserving the story so that it can be reused in training evaluation of future actions. I designed the animated infographics for the project. The video was based on a shooting incident that took place on the Ohio State campus in 2010.

Why did you choose Ohio State for grad school?

I only applied to schools in United States, and Ohio State’s design department is one of the best in the world.

What are your future plans?

I want to work in the interactive design field and use my expertise to create tools that are beneficial to the public through information design and data visualization.
