Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching, 2019
Glenn Martinez, professor of Hispanic linguistics in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and director of the Center for Languages, Literatures and Cultures, has received the university’s Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching, an annual award that recognizes up to 10 faculty members for their teaching excellence. A committee of students, previous awardees and alumni choose the recipients.
“[Professor Martinez] treats his students with respect and sees them as team players or collaborators. He is always trying to help you grow as a professional and academic,” wrote one of Martinez’s graduate students. “He is also very committed to the Latino community here in Columbus.”
“Dr. Martinez is not only concerned about our weekly sessions together, but forging life-long learners and globally minded citizens who will bring critical thinking skills to their everyday lives,” said another.
Martinez and other recipients will receive a $5,000 honorarium, as well as an increase of $1,200 to their base salary. Awardees are also inducted into Ohio State’s Academy of Teaching.
Much of Martinez’s work surrounds language and health care, which has led to collaborations with the Cancer Control Program at Ohio State's Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute.
