Peter Craigmile

Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching, 2019

Peter Craigmile, professor in the Department of Statistics, has received the university’s Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching, an annual award that recognizes up to 10 faculty members for their teaching excellence. A committee of students, previous awardees and alumni choose the recipients.

“Peter’s passion for [statistics] is obvious in the energy he brings to every class and he seems to savor the opportunity to share his knowledge with his students,” wrote one of Craigmile’s former graduate students. “No other teacher I encountered at Ohio State is as well-prepared, as attentive to detail, as energetic and as dedicated to his students as he is.”

“Dr. Craigmile is a highly engaging teacher, who clearly spends a lot of time thinking about how to best deliver content to students in an effective way,” said another.

Craigmile and other recipients will receive a $5,000 honorarium, as well as an increase of $1,200 to their base salary. Awardees are also inducted into Ohio State’s Academy of Teaching.

Much of Craigmile’s work surrounds time series analysis, spatial statistics, space-time modeling and longitudinal methods. He is a fellow of the American Statistical Association and the Royal Statistical Society and a member of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, the International Environmetrics Society, the International Society for Bayesian Analysis and the Edinburgh Mathematical Society.
