Harmony Bench

Virginia Hull Research Award for Scholarship in the Humanities, 2017

Harmony Bench, assistant professor of dance, will be using her award to support archival research that she will undertake at the Library of Congress this summer. Her project, “Transmissions: Katherine Dunham of the Global Stage,” is part of a larger collaborative digital humanities project, Dance in Transit, an analysis of the domestic and international touring of dance companies circa 1900-1950. Professor Bench’s project contributes to recent trends in the emerging field of cultural analytics by advancing historical research at simultaneously macro- and micro-levels, focusing on the dynamic interplay between what occurs on and offstage in cultural transmission.
