Hear from Los Angeles–based artist Charles Gaines, renowned since the 1970s for his photographs, drawings, and works on paper created by using methodical, rule-based systems. His ongoing Manifestos series, for example, translates revolutionary speeches, such as Malcolm X’s last public address in 1965, into musical scores that are performed or incorporated into multimedia installations.

A highly regarded educator at CalArts, as well as a pioneering proponent of conceptualism, Gaines represented the United States in the 56th Venice Biennale (2015), is the recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, and has had recent major solo retrospectives at the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles.

Cosponsored by Ohio State’s Department of Art’s Living Culture Initiative and the Cultural Events Committee.
