Panel to Explore Julius Caesar Production

Gregory Doran, new artistic director for the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) will take part in a panel discussion with Ohio State faculty members regarding the upcoming performances of the RSC’s Julius Caesar. The discussion is scheduled for Thursday, May 2, from 4 to 6 pm in room 165 of the Thompson Library, 1858 Neil Avenue Mall on campus. Doran is director of Julius Caesar, a celebrated production set in present-day Africa with a cast of black, British actors. It will be performed at the Southern Theatre in Columbus May 1-5, and is presented in Columbus by Ohio State and CAPA.

The panel discussion will center on the RSC production of Julius Caesar and about Shakespeare’s relevance to the modern world in giving a voice to oppressed peoples. In addition to Doran, panelists include Richard Fletcher, associate professor of Classics; Hannibal Hamlin, professor of English and a Shakespearean scholar; Kevin McClatchy, MFA alumnus in theatre and coordinator of Shakespeare theatre workshops; and Lupenga Mphande, professor of African American and African Studies, a poet who has worked closely with the African National Congress.
