Women in Antarctica: Celebrating 50 Years of Exploration
Time: Various
Event Host: Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center
Short Description: The Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first all-women research team in Antarctica — which included four Ohio State scientists — with a symposium on Oct. 17-18, 2019.
Today it is commonplace for women to conduct fieldwork in Antarctica. However, that has not always been the case. In 1969, researchers from Ohio State's Institute of Polar Studies (now the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center) comprised the U.S.'s first all-woman science team to work in Antarctica. The team members were Lois M. Jones, the leader of the party, Kay L. Lindsay, Eileen McSaveney and Terry Lee Tickhill.
Join the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center for a symposium celebrating the 50th anniversary of the research team on Thursday, Oct. 17, and Friday, Oct. 18, which will be led by Lois Jones and explore women's past, present and future in science, research, discovery and leadership.
