In Cat Mailloux's words:
When I was growing up my family had the tradition of visiting the Macy’s department store in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Each year, on the 8th floor, they set up an elaborate walk-through story book. The experience was a mixture of theatre, reading a book, and sculpture. Complex and detailed scenes made up of props, fake backdrops, and animatronic characters were set up for each part of the story. Visitors were Visitors were invited to meander, read aloud the text that accompanied the scene, and make their way through the story.
I am interested in creating a similar experience in Hopkins Hall through sculpture, text, and drawing that is based on the ideas currently present in my studio. In the space, I would build small sets that visitors would walk around and move through to create a personal, walkable narrative that focuses on the need to care and be cared for. In this show specifically, I am interested in how care manifests itself throughout my personal history and present experiences.
