How the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Selects New Investigators

November 20, 2019
All Day
L035 James Cancer Center

Time: 4:00 p.m.
Event Host: Department of Molecular Genetics

Dr. Perlman has had a remarkable scientific career and a long history with OSU. He was an OSU faculty member (’71-’90). At OSU, Dr. Perlman investigated the genetics and molecular biology of mitochondria using budding yeast as the model organism; that research unexpectedly led to studies of splicing of group I and group II introns. A significant finding was the discovery that Group II introns self-splice in vitro and do so by a mechanism closely resembling that of spliceosomal introns in eukaryotic nuclear genes. Dr. Perlman also was the director of the MCDB interdisciplinary PhD program (’84-’88) and the inaugural chair of the Molecular Genetics department (’86-’90). In 1990, Dr. Perlman was recruited to UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas where he served several administrative roles before joining HHMI in 2004 where he serves as a Senior Scientific Officer.

Dr. Perlman will provide information about HHMI aimed at helping OSU faculty and administration enhance their knowledge of HHMI programs that may benefit them. He will discuss the HHMI Investigator Program (new competition announced 10/22/19) as well as the Hanna Gray Fellows Program (new competition announced 9/12/19), transitional grants for younger scientists from groups that are underrepresented in academia.
