Short Description: Ohio State Dance presents a concert of works by Israel Institute Visiting Artist Alon Karniel and several of our faculty members. All the pieces will showcase performances by BFA and MFA dance students.
Ohio State Dance presents a concert of works by a guest artist and faculty, including:
A new work by Israel Institute Visiting Artist Alon Karniel inspired by Erik Satie’s Vexations, a mysterious, one-page musical work bearing the inscription: “To play this motif 840 times in succession, it would be advisable to prepare oneself beforehand, in the deepest silence, by serious immobilities.” Shuttling between theme and variation, the music creates an environment where time becomes elastic and in whose stream the subtleties of experience emerge. The movement material used in the work is from a solo Karniel created in 2018 as part of a 12-hour durational performance of Vexations led by dancemaker Amos Hetz.
Flock, by Emerita Professor Bebe Miller, a work for nine women with a theme and concept that grew out of being in the same room and seeing who we were and might be, together. Miller has a bird feeder at home; watching the constant mingling, regrouping and stillness between the birds felt like watching a community spend time together. She has enjoyed the metaphor of a distinctive kind of kinship hovering around the studio.
Originally choreographed for the Van Pelt Dance Ensemble for six dancers, Now is the Time (Redux, 1988) by Professor Susan Van Pelt Petry has been re-set many times over the decades. This version has expanded to nine dancers, and was constructed not from video, but only from original choreographic notes and scores, muscle memory and fresh eyes, keeping true to the sense that "now is the time."
O Mortal (1992) has been an iconic solo piece for Professor Susan Van Pelt Petry, seldom performed by others. It is intended to be felt not as "slow," but instead filled with time and density, and buzzing with molecular speed.
Phasmids, which is a collaborative event piece by Vivian Corey, Abbey Malec-Kenyon, Sophie Kussman, Mercedes Hicks, Isabelle Johnston, Sam Marszalek, Kamryn Oplinger, Ava Raczkowski , Ashton Wise, and Professor Daniel Roberts, to be performed during the Ohio State Dance Denmark tour in summer 2022. Phasmids are any of an order of large cylindrical or sometimes flattened insects that have long legs, strictly phytophagous habits, and resemble leaves or twigs.
Named after the infamous slam dunk move originated by Julius "Dr. J" Irving, Rock the Baby is a group work by Professor Abby Zbikowski for 15 students that reimagines the conventions of experimental dance aesthetics, creating a genre-bending performance that aims to invite new audiences into avante-garde spaces. Made in collaboration with its cast, Rock the Baby is an exhibition of teamwork, mental fortitude and kinetic vitality.

Admission is free, but an online reservation is required and an online donation is appreciated. Despite the ongoing pandemic, the Department of Dance is committed to making sure the students have opportunities to perform, and that audiences can continue to grow, to find dance a profound vessel for emotional, intellectual and physical awakening. But for COVID-era relief, we are not charging for tickets this semester. In lieu, if possible, we suggest donating $5 (or $500!) to one of our funds that helps our students and department do its hard work.
