The College of Arts of Sciences Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice is delighted to host and organize, with support from the College of Business and College of Engineering, the 2024 BIPOC Leaders Forum. This forum centers the experiences, perspectives, and needs of BIPOC leaders or people considering leadership roles in academia. This forum is open to all.

Speakers
Leslie Wong
Dr. Leslie E. Wong served as President of Northern Michigan University (Marquette, MI), San Francisco State University (2012 – 2019). He exited retirement in 2023 to become the interim President of Connecticut College, AY 23-24. Connecticut College is one of New England’s premier liberal arts, residential private colleges.
Dr. Wong was devoted to moving Northern Michigan University, San Francisco State University and Connecticut College forward to achieve their full potential. He has held executive leadership positions at Valley City State University (North Dakota), the University of Southern Colorado (Pueblo, CO) and The Evergreen State College (Olympia, WA).
Dr. Wong served on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Colleges and Universities and was a member of the National Collegiate Athletics Association’s Division II President’s Council. Dr. Wong received the 2014 Asian Pacific Americans in Higher Education (APAHE) President’s Award in recognition of his outstanding leadership and contributions to the field of higher education. Region 6 of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) awarded him the President’s Award in 2015.
Dr. Wong holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Gonzaga University, a master’s degree in Experimental Psychology from Eastern Washington University, and a PhD in Educational Psychology from Washington State University. He maintains research interests in educational technology, learning assessment and the role of underrepresented leadership in the academy. Recently, along with others, he is organizing Asian American (AA) higher education leaders to build a pipeline of AA leaders whose presence in higher education is painfully low.
Adele C. Brumfield
Adele C. Brumfield is the vice provost for enrollment management at the University of Michigan. A first-generation college graduate committed to working with diverse populations to increase access and equity in enrollment and financial support for students, she has spent 30 years promoting the transformative power of higher education to students across the United States and around the world.
As a recognized leader in enrollment management, Brumfield actively works with higher education-focused organizations such as the Overseas Schools Project, funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Overseas Schools and the College Board. She serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Common App and on the advisory council for the College Board’s Access and Diversity Collaborative. Brumfield is also a member of the Strategic Higher Education Council (SHEAC) for Cambridge Assessment International Education providing insights and guidance to the global organization.
Prior to U-M, Brumfield was the associate vice chancellor for enrollment management at the University of California San Diego. She served as the director of admissions and recruitment at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and held admissions positions at the University of Chicago, Denison University, and Marquette University. Brumfield has also been a member and chair of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Board and president of the Wisconsin Association for College Admissions Counseling (WACAC).
Brumfield earned a Bachelor of Arts in speech with a major in broadcast communication from Marquette University, supported by the university’s Educational Opportunity Program, and a Master of Arts in telecommunication from Michigan State University.
Michelle Duguid
Michelle Duguid is a leading scholar in the areas of social status, power and politics, influence and decision-making, diversity in organizations and creativity and innovation. Her research examines the influence of social hierarchy, stereotypes and inter- and intra-group relations on individuals’ perceptions and interactions, and relations among group members. Professor Duguid also does research which examines individual and group processes that affect creativity and the quality of decision-making.
Professor Duguid’s research has been published in premier academic journals including Administrative Science Quarterly, The Journal of Applied Psychology, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Organization Science, and Psychological Science. Her research has also been cited in many media outlets such as Forbes, The Washington Post, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Fast Company, NPR, The New York Times, and The Economist. Professor Duguid also serves on the editorial board of Organization Science, the Academy of Management Review, Personnel Psychology and the Academy of Management Journal. She is also on the board of Tenshey and Shirley Chisholm Education Foundation.
Professor Duguid earned a BS in Psychology and BA in Political Science from Howard University and earned a MS and PhD in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University.
Derrick L. Tillman-Kelly
Derrick L. Tillman-Kelly, PhD, is chief of staff, serving as principal advisor to Dean Ayanna Howard. An experienced higher education researcher, administrator, and project manager, he most recently served as director of the Fellows Program and Network Engagement for the University Innovation Alliance (UIA). In this role, he worked with member universities to support institutional transformation with the goal of eliminating race/ethnicity, first-generation status, and socioeconomic status as predictors of student success and completion. Ohio State is one of 11 founding UIA member institutions, and Ohio State's president serves on its board.
Prior to being named director of the UIA Fellows Program, Tillman-Kelly served in multiple roles at Ohio State, including as the inaugural UIA Fellow and special assistant to the director of the Center for Higher Education Enterprise. He also is co-principal investigator and research lead of the Louis Stokes Midwest Regional Center of Excellence for Broadening Participation in STEM, which is funded by the National Science Foundation.
Tillman-Kelly earned his PhD in educational policy and leadership with a specialization in higher education and student affairs from Ohio State. He also earned a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs from Indiana University and a bachelor’s degree from Illinois Wesleyan University.
