With an interest in simple machines, I have begun to explore the movement that can be created from pulling a lever, operating a pulley or rotating a wheel.
The first piece that I wish to install will be based on the idea of “catching a breeze”, this self-imposed gesture will take place through the interactive use of a devised pulley system. Composed ceramic and fabric will operate around a pivot point. Starched fabric will become the “blades” of the fan while 2 ceramic pieces will act as a base for the blades to be pulled/fall onto. The piece will be situated on the ground and will be comparable in size to the body.
Within a simple understanding of material and object, I am focusing on the way capacity of a space can be defined. Thinking about the volume of an interior- I believe sound can occupy a room or fill a void just as well as bodies, furniture, objects etc. . . Through the use of a manually turned record player, I will invite the audience to participate in an act I see as a completion of space. The piece will consist of a rectangle constructed out of wood and canvas that creates a tent like structure for a viewer to go into and on their own time operate the machine.
