CityMusic in sponsorship with the East Asian Studies Center is offering a rare opportunity to experience Tuvan throat-singing performed by Mongolian ensemble Huun Huur Tu. The music of Huun Huur Tu has been described by The Chicago Tribune as, "… unfamiliar yet very accessible, an other-worldly but deeply spiritual music that is rooted in the sounds of nature." The most distinctive characteristic of Huun Huur Tu's music is throat singing, in which the singer sings both the note (drone) and the drone's overtone(s), thus producing two or three notes simultaneously. The overtone may sound like a flute, whistle or bird, but is actually solely a product of the human voice.
